The Real Club Náutico of Palma has decided to suspend the regatta initially programed from the 4 to the 8 of December, due to sanitary requirements and the restriction to gather more than 150 persons in a sports event.
The organizing committee of the 70 Trofeo Ciutat de Palma regatta has decided to suspend the edition programed next 4 to 8 December and postpone it till 2021 due to the pandemic situation, which establishes a series of restrictions in the Balearic Islands, one of them being the impossibility to organize sports events with more than 150 persons.
This competition, which is the oldest in the Balearic Islands, usually gathers 500 sailors from 12 countries in different dinghy classes. The organizing committee considers that the actual circumstances would denature the regatta, therefore postponing the event till December 2021.
The actual situation recommends to avoid gathering people as this could contribute to the Covid 19 propagation. The RCNP also took the same decision in the case of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE and PalmaVela, both have been postponed till 2021 giving priority to sanitary safety guidelines.
The club's president, Emerico Fuster, states “we have to accept that the 2020 season has supposed a parenthesis for our main sports and social events. It is a real pity to have to postpone our most important regattas of the club’s calendar, but the sanitary responsibility we have with our citizens, members and visitants is the main reason to have taken this decision. We really hope to be able to enjoy all of these postponed events next year”.
The Ciutat de Palma Trophy has been held non-stop since 1950, two years after the club’s foundation. In the past decade it has been considered as one of the most important dinghy regattas for young sailors.
